FMCSA Safety Measurement System (SMS)
The HOS Compliance BASIC measures violations related to Hours of Service regulations. These rules limit the number of hours a commercial motor vehicle driver may operate and mandate rest periods. Common violations include exceeding the 11-hour driving limit, the 14-hour on-duty window, the 60/70-hour weekly limits, and failing to maintain accurate records of duty status. Since the ELD mandate took effect, violations related to Electronic Logging Devices (malfunctioning, tampering, or missing ELDs) have become increasingly common. Falsification of logs carries the highest severity weight in this BASIC.
