How old is your MC authority?
Look up your FMCSA grant or reinstate date, see age in days, and compare to broker-published setup gates. Confirm with the broker — these are commercial requirements, not federal law.
No FMCSA legal minimum MC age. Broker authority-age gates are copied from public carrier-setup pages (and archives when pages change). They are not FMCSA filings. Gates change; always confirm with the broker before you apply.
When to use this
- → A broker asked how old your MC is before they will set you up
- → You just got ACTIVE authority and want to know which published gates you may already meet
- → You were reinstated and need the reinstate clock, not the original grant
- → You want broker-qualify results without typing days by hand

How to use this tool
- Enter your USDOT or MC number. Paste a USDOT (e.g. 3462091) or MC docket (e.g. MC123456). The tool resolves the carrier and reads motor-carrier authority rows from FMCSA-sourced data.
- Read the grant or reinstate date. We prefer the ACTIVE motor-carrier Authority granted date (action_original). If missing, we use the latest GRANT or REINSTATE event date. If neither exists, we show no age — we do not invent one.
- Note your age in days. Age is calendar days from that grant/reinstate date to today (UTC). Older authorities are capped at 2000 days for the broker-gate comparison, which still clears every published gate we track.
- Review brokers whose published gate you may meet. We list brokers whose public setup page quotes a days-old gate at or below your age, plus profiles that publish requirements with no age line. These are broker requirements — not FMCSA filings.
- Confirm with the broker before applying. Gates change, conflicts exist across pages, and brokers screen insurance and safety separately. Call or check the live setup portal before you submit a packet.
- Continue your startup sequence. If you are still filing authority, use the Carrier Startup Checklist. To prospect peers by age band, open Find Carriers age presets.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How old does my MC authority need to be to set up with brokers?
- There is no single FMCSA legal minimum MC age for broker setup. Each broker publishes its own authority-age gate on its carrier onboarding page (often 30, 90, or 180 days). Use this tool to read your grant/reinstate date from FMCSA records, then compare it to those published gates — and confirm with the broker before you apply.
- How is MC authority age calculated here?
- We use the latest ACTIVE motor-carrier Authority.action_original (the Granted date shown on USDOT authority cards). If that date is missing, we fall back to the latest GRANT or REINSTATE original_served date from AuthorityEvent. We never invent a date or an FMCSA minimum.
- Is there a federal law requiring my MC to be a certain number of days old?
- No. FMCSA grants operating authority; it does not publish a universal days-old rule for which brokers may onboard you. Broker age gates are private commercial requirements copied from public setup pages — not federal law.
- What does “may qualify” mean on this page?
- It means the broker’s published days-old gate is at or below your calculated MC age. It is not a guarantee they will accept your packet. Brokers also screen insurance limits, safety rating, factoring, and invite-only portals. Always confirm with the broker.
- Where do broker age gates come from?
- They are copied from public carrier-setup pages (and archived copies when live pages change). They are not FMCSA filings. Gates can change without notice — treat every number as observed, not authoritative.
- Can I look up by MC number instead of USDOT?
- Yes. Enter an MC (or FF/MX) docket, or a bare USDOT number. We resolve the docket to its carrier, then compute age from that carrier’s motor-carrier authority grant clock.
- What if my authority was reinstated after a revocation?
- When the ACTIVE authority row lacks a grant date, we use the latest REINSTATE / REINSTATED event date as the age clock — the same semantics as the broker-qualify deep-link on USDOT pages.
- How do I find other new carriers by authority age?
- Use Find Carriers age presets (for example under 30 days or 31–90 days) to build an outbound list by domicile ZIP. That desk is for prospecting peers — this tool answers how old your own MC is for broker setup.
