Your carrier startup timeline

See filed → active dates from your FMCSA authority rows. The static startup checklist stays the step-by-step how-to — this tool answers where your USDOT is in the sequence.

Dates come from public filings only. Missing filed or grant dates stay blank — we never invent them. “4–6 weeks” language elsewhere on the site is descriptive industry timing, not an FMCSA guarantee.

When to use this

  • → You filed OP-1 and want to see whether a grant date has landed
  • → You want filed → active elapsed days from your Authority rows
  • → You are comparing your timeline to the static startup checklist
  • → You need insurance/BOC-3 milestones next to the authority arc

Prefer the static guide? Carrier startup checklist.

Reference sequence

Educational arc only — full steps, costs, and official links stay on the startup checklist.

  1. 1. USDOT number
Register in URS — safety identifier before operating authority.
  2. 2. File for MC authority
OP-1 application; protest window before grant.
  3. 3. Insurance + BOC-3 on file
Insurer files BMC-91/34; process agent files BOC-3.
  4. 4. Authority becomes ACTIVE
Grant/reinstate date starts the MC-age clock for broker gates.
  5. 5. UCR / IFTA / IRP / Clearinghouse
Post-authority ops filings — see the static startup checklist.

Next steps

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your USDOT or MC number. We resolve the carrier and load Authority, active insurance, and BOC-3 rows from FMCSA-sourced data.
  2. Find the filed date. Authority.application_date is the filed milestone when present. If missing, we show unknown — we do not invent a date.
  3. Note insurance and BOC-3 milestones. When ACTIVE/ON FILE insurance effective dates or Boc3Filing rows exist, they appear between filed and active.
  4. Read the ACTIVE grant date. Authority.action_original on an ACTIVE motor-carrier row is the granted milestone and the start of the MC-age clock.
  5. Use elapsed days when both ends exist. If filed and ACTIVE grant are both present, we show calendar days between them. Otherwise we show days since filed or days active alone.
  6. Return to the static checklist for remaining steps. UCR, IFTA, IRP, and Clearinghouse stay on /tools/startup-checklist/. Use /tools/mc-age/ after you are ACTIVE.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the startup timeline show?
For your USDOT, we plot filed (Authority.application_date) → insurance/BOC-3 milestones when present → ACTIVE grant (Authority.action_original). Missing dates stay blank — we never invent them.
Is this the same as the Carrier Startup Checklist?
No. The checklist is the static step-by-step guide with costs and official links. This timeline is interactive: it reads your carrier’s filing dates from our FMCSA-sourced tables.
Why is my filed date missing?
Some authority rows lack application_date in the source feed. When that happens we show unknown for filed — check the USDOT authority section or FMCSA directly.
How long does filed → active usually take?
Industry copy often cites about 4–6 weeks after insurance and BOC-3 are on file, including the protest window. That is descriptive timing, not an FMCSA guarantee or legal minimum.
What starts the MC age clock?
The ACTIVE grant/reinstate date (action_original, with event fallback on the MC-age tool) — not the application filed date. Use /tools/mc-age/ once you are ACTIVE.
Do insurance and BOC-3 always appear on the timeline?
Only when we have an ACTIVE/ON FILE policy effective date or a Boc3Filing row. Missing milestones mean “not in our snapshot,” not a verdict that you skipped them.
Can I use MC instead of USDOT?
Yes. Same resolver as the MC-age and ready-to-operate tools.
Where do I go for UCR, IFTA, and Clearinghouse steps?
Those stay on the static Carrier Startup Checklist. This timeline focuses on the authority filing arc that leads to ACTIVE status.
