About FMCSA Registration Decisions

What is an FMCSA registration decision?

An FMCSA registration decision is any administrative action the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration takes on a motor-carrier operating authority: granting a new MC, FF, or MX docket; revoking authority because of an insurance lapse, safety violation, or unpaid penalty; or reinstating authority that was previously revoked once the underlying issue is cured. Each decision is recorded in FMCSA's Authority History (authhist) feed with the carrier's USDOT number, docket number, authority type, and the dates the action was taken and served.

How often is this page updated?

This page refreshes every 24 hours. We pull FMCSA's authhist feed daily, append new actions to the AuthorityEvent table, and rebuild today's archive page. Decisions made today typically appear here within 24 to 48 hours, depending on when FMCSA posts the daily file. Each historical day-page is a permanent archive — once recorded, the URL keeps the decisions made on that date forever.

What does it mean if my authority was revoked?

Revocation means the carrier has lost the legal right to operate in interstate commerce under that docket. The most common cause is a lapse in required public-liability insurance (BMC-91 or BMC-91X), followed by cancellation of the BOC-3 process-agent filing, unpaid civil penalties, or out-of-service safety orders. Revoked dockets stay attached to the carrier permanently — FMCSA does not transfer or reissue a docket — and reinstatement is possible by curing the underlying issue (typically by re-filing the missing form and paying outstanding fees).

How can I track changes to a specific carrier's authority?

Visit the carrier's USDOT page at /usdot/{number}/ for a full action history, or look up the docket directly at /authority/{docket}/. The detail page lists every grant, revocation, and reinstatement in chronological order with the FMCSA-served dates. Pair that with the daily decisions feed on this page to spot when an action lands across the broader carrier population.

Where does this data come from?

Every entry on this page is sourced from FMCSA's authhist feed — the agency's Authority History download published by the Office of Registration. We import the feed daily, deduplicate on the natural key (USDOT, docket, original_action, original_served), and write each row to our AuthorityEvent table. No counts on this page are estimated or interpolated; if a date shows zero decisions, that's because the FMCSA data file recorded zero events for that day.
