What is an MC number and MC certificate?
An MC number (Motor Carrier number) is a unique identifier assigned by FMCSA when granting operating authority. The MC certificate is the official document proving that authority was granted. It includes the carrier's MC number, USDOT number, authority type, and effective date.
What types of MC certificates are available?
Three types: New grants (CPL) issued when FMCSA grants operating authority, Reinstatements (REI) when previously revoked authority is restored, and Transfers when authority moves between carriers. All types are available for free download.
How do I get a copy of my MC authority after it's been reinstated?
Search for your MC number above. Reinstatement certificates (REI) are published by FMCSA when authority is restored. The certificate page shows all documents on file including the original grant and any reinstatements.
What is the difference between MC, FF, and MX numbers?
MC (Motor Carrier) numbers are for carriers transporting regulated commodities. FF (Freight Forwarder) numbers are for freight forwarders arranging transportation. MX numbers are for Mexican carriers with cross-border authority. All are issued by FMCSA and certificates are available here.
How far back do the MC certificates go?
The FMCSA Certificate Publication List archives go back to September 30, 2003. Certificates issued before that date are not available in digital form. Coverage includes weekday publications only (no weekends or federal holidays).
About FMCSA Operating Authority
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) oversees all entities requiring operating authority to conduct interstate commerce: motor carriers (common and contract), property brokers, and freight forwarders. Each entity type has different requirements for insurance, BOC-3 filings, and operational permissions.
