Lighting and Reflector Requirements for CMVs

Regulatory Framework

Lighting and reflector requirements for commercial motor vehicles are governed by two separate regulatory frameworks. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) under 49 CFR Part 571 establish manufacturing requirements for new vehicles. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) under 49 CFR 393, Subpart B set ongoing operational requirements for vehicles in service. Both must be satisfied for a CMV to be legally operated on public roads. Violations related to lighting are frequently cited during roadside inspections.

Required Lamps on Power Units

Trucks and tractors must be equipped with headlamps, front and rear turn signals, tail lamps, stop lamps, backup lamps, clearance lamps, side marker lamps, and identification lamps. Vehicles 80 inches or wider require three amber identification lamps centered on the front and three red identification lamps centered on the rear. Clearance lamps mark the overall width and height of the vehicle. All lamps must be in working condition whenever the vehicle is operated on public roads.

Trailer Lighting Requirements

Trailers have their own set of required lamps and reflectors. Every trailer must have tail lamps, stop lamps, turn signals, clearance lamps, side marker lamps, and identification lamps. Trailers over 80 inches wide and over 30 feet long require intermediate amber side marker lamps and reflectors. Conspicuity treatments using retroreflective sheeting or reflex reflectors are mandatory on trailers manufactured after December 1993. These treatments must cover the lower rear area, sides, and upper rear corners.

Reflector Specifications

Reflectors supplement active lighting by returning light from external sources. Red reflectors are required on the rear of all CMVs, and amber reflectors on the sides. Rear reflectors must be mounted between 15 and 60 inches above the road surface. Side reflectors are positioned at the front, rear, and midpoints of long vehicles. Reflectors must be clean, unbroken, and properly aimed. Damaged or missing reflectors are common violation findings during inspections.

Conspicuity and Retroreflective Tape

Retroreflective conspicuity tape significantly improves the nighttime visibility of trailers. The tape must be applied in an alternating red-and-white pattern on the sides and a continuous red-and-white pattern across the rear. Each strip must be at least two inches wide. Side applications must cover at least half the trailer length, distributed as evenly as possible. Upper rear corners require retroreflective treatment in a pattern at least 12 inches long on each side. Missing or degraded conspicuity markings are enforceable violations under the FMCSA violation codes.

Lamp Color Standards

Federal regulations specify exact colors for each lamp position. Front-facing lamps and forward side markers must emit amber light. Rear-facing lamps and rearward side markers must emit red light, except for backup lamps (white) and turn signals (amber or red on the rear). No blue, green, or other non-standard colors may be displayed on a CMV. Improper lamp colors can result in enforcement action and may indicate unauthorized vehicle modifications.

Inspection and Maintenance

Drivers must verify all lighting and reflectors during every pre-trip inspection. Check that all lamps illuminate properly, lens covers are not cracked or discolored, and wiring connections are secure. Replace burned-out bulbs immediately. LED replacements must match the original lamp specifications for color, intensity, and beam pattern. Corrosion at electrical connections is a leading cause of intermittent lighting failures.
