What Is DataQs?

DataQs is FMCSA's online system that allows motor carriers and drivers to request a review (called a Request for Data Review, or RDR) of federal and state safety data that they believe is inaccurate. This includes inspection reports, violations, crash reports, and other safety records that appear in SMS scores and on your carrier profile.

Filing a DataQs challenge does not guarantee the data will be changed, but it does trigger a formal review by the state or agency that originally recorded the data.

What Data Can Be Challenged?

You can file DataQs requests for:

  • Inspection violations: Violations you believe were cited incorrectly, misidentified, or attributed to the wrong carrier or driver
  • Crash records: Crashes incorrectly attributed to your carrier, incorrect severity classification, or factual errors
  • Census data: Errors in your carrier registration information (company name, address, fleet size, cargo type)
  • Operating authority status: Incorrect authority type or status reflected in FMCSA systems

Step-by-Step: Filing a DataQs Challenge

Step 1: Identify the Data to Challenge

Review your carrier's inspection and violation history on your USDOT profile or through our inspection search. Identify the specific report number and the data element you believe is incorrect.

Step 2: Create a DataQs Account

Visit dataqs.fmcsa.dot.gov and register for an account if you don't already have one. You will need your USDOT number and company information.

Step 3: Submit the Request for Data Review

  1. Log in to DataQs and click "Submit an RDR"
  2. Select the type of data you are challenging (inspection, crash, census, etc.)
  3. Enter the inspection report number or crash report number
  4. Clearly describe what is incorrect and why. Be specific—reference the exact violation code, BASIC affected, or data field in question
  5. Upload supporting documentation such as repair receipts, photos, maintenance records, or sworn statements from the driver
  6. Submit the RDR

Step 4: Track Your Request

DataQs assigns a tracking number to each RDR. You can log in at any time to check the status. The reviewing state or agency has a target response time, though complex reviews may take longer.

Step 5: Review the Decision

The reviewing authority will either:

  • Change the data: The record is corrected and SMS scores are recalculated at the next monthly update
  • Uphold the data: The original data stands. You will receive an explanation of why the challenge was denied
  • Partially modify: Some elements may be corrected while others are upheld

Tips for Successful DataQs Challenges

  • Be factual and specific: Explain exactly what data element is wrong and provide evidence. Avoid emotional arguments.
  • Provide documentation: Repair receipts, dated photos, certified inspection reports, calibration records, and driver statements all strengthen your case.
  • Act promptly: File your RDR as soon as you identify incorrect data. Timely challenges are easier to investigate.
  • Challenge one item at a time: Submit separate RDRs for separate issues rather than combining multiple challenges into one request.
  • Understand limitations: DataQs is for factual errors, not policy disagreements. You cannot challenge a violation simply because you disagree with the regulation.

Impact on SMS Scores

While a DataQs challenge is pending, the disputed data remains in your SMS scores. If the challenge is successful and the data is changed or removed, your BASICs percentiles will be recalculated at the next monthly SMS update (usually the third week of each month).
