Complaint Summary

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Owner Narrative

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 WORKHORSE W22 CHASSIS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED ACCORDING TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 04V084000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC) IN 2004. SEVERAL YEARS LATER, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE BRAKING SYSTEM WOULD HANG UP OR LOCK DURING EMERGENCY STOPPING. DURING THE FAILURE, THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ACCOMPANIED BY A BURNING ODOR. HE CALLED A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND A TECHNICIAN STATED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE BRAKE CALIPER, PADS, AND ABS MODULE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED ACCORDING TO THE RECALL. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE NOT APPLICABLE. UPDATED 10/5/09 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE ROTORS HAD CRACKS, THE PAS WERE SCARRED AND HAD CHUNKS MISSING FROM THEM. THE ROTORS WERE TURNED AND THE PADS WERE REPLACED. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THE BRAKES WERE REPAIRED IN 2004 AND NO FURTHER ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN. THE CONSUMER STATED THE PROBLEM WAS NEVER REMEDIED AND THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE 2002. UPDATED 10/06/09
