How to read safety benchmark

  1. Enter USDOT or MC — We load SMS driver/vehicle OOS rates from the Carrier row.
  2. Compare to peer band — ACTIVE carriers within ±50% power units.
  3. Read percentile context — Descriptive comparison — not Satisfactory/Conditional/Unsatisfactory.
  4. Drill into inspections — Open the USDOT profile for violation and inspection history.
  5. Verify on FMCSA SMS — Confirm rates on the official SMS snapshot when disputes matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What OOS rates does this compare?
FMCSA SMS-derived driver and vehicle out-of-service rates stored on the Carrier row, compared to a peer band of ACTIVE carriers with similar power-unit counts (±50%).
Why might peer benchmark be missing?
We hide the section when the carrier lacks power units or driver OOS rate, or when fewer than five peers exist in the band — same honesty rules as the USDOT detail page.
Is a better-than-peer OOS rate a safety rating?
No. It is a descriptive percentile-style comparison on public SMS fields, not FMCSA’s Safety Rating (Satisfactory / Conditional / Unsatisfactory).
Why is my lookup result page noindex?
Personalized ?q= pages use noindex, follow. The empty form URL stays indexable so search engines find the tool, not every USDOT permutation.
How fresh is FMCSA data on TruckCodex?
We refresh from nightly FMCSA imports. Check /meta/freshness/ or freshness badges on linked desks — not real-time L&I.
Can I get email alerts when my insurance or authority changes?
Not yet. TruckCodex is shipping free lookup tools first; portfolio email digests and saved filters are on the roadmap (Wave D alerts). Bookmark this page or re-run your USDOT until push alerts launch.
